Gardner (Gardy) Frost, President & Chair:
Gardy is a financial advisor working for a private firm in Vancouver. He has been helping local families and businesses make informed financial decisions since 2003. Born and raised in Vancouver, he is very excited about working with a local organization focused on the children of our city and of the greater region and province. Gardy completed a degree in Pacific and Asian Studies from the University of Victoria, with a concentration in Chinese. It was here he met and since married Kate (Butterfield) and now has three children: Avery, Charles and Hudson.
Juma Wood, Vice-Chair:
Juma an internal project training manager with Lululemon Athletica in Vancouver. His background is Education, and he has worked educating children and adults in his career and private life, in companies, in schools, through martial arts and through athletics for more than 20 years. He feels blessed and fortunate to be asked to serve the children of the Centre and is curious to learn how best to help steward the future for those who need our services.
Michael Sauder, Treasurer:
Michael is currently the sales training manager for Metrie, North America’s largest manufacturer/distributor of interior mouldings & doors. After graduating from high school, Michael moved to Japan where he got his Bachelor of Business Administration. After university, he and his wife Erina started an English language and culture school, which they managed and taught at together. After an 8 year hiatus, Michael returned to Vancouver with Erina to settle down and they are now blessed to have two beautiful children, Milei and Kiya. Michael is grateful to have an opportunity to be a part of a center that has such a profound impact on the lives of children and their families.
Andrea Manchon, Secretary:
Andrea is the parent of a Children’s Hearing and Speech Centre graduate, and a passionate communications and engagement professional. Andrea began her career as a journalist, reporting on local issues and stories in the Vancouver area, and is now part of a network of consultants providing strategic communications and engagement support to a variety of clients across BC and Alberta. Andrea holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of British Columbia and a Diploma of Technology in Broadcast and Media Communications from BCIT. Andrea’s daughter Alice completed the First Words and Preschool programs at CHSC, and is now a happy kindergarten student at her neighbourhood French Immersion school.
Scott Mackenzie, Past President:
Scott’s daughter Lucy is a former student of Children’s Hearing & Speech Centre of BC and he is pleased to give back to the community that provided so much for her. Scott and his wife Sarah have been and continue to be involved with fundraising for cancer patients and research. Lucy has an older brother, Will, and a younger sister, Annie. Scott is a lawyer at Boughton Law.
Ben Cherniavsky, Board Member:
Ben is a Managing Director at Raymond James. He closely follows a group of publicly-listed companies that participate in various segments of the construction, transportation, and resource sectors of the economy. Ben regularly visits institutional and retail investors across North America and Europe who rely on his research to guide their investment strategies. According to annual industry surveys, Ben has been consistently ranked among the top analysts in his field. Ben holds an MBA from the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario and a BA in Economics from the University of Alberta. Prior to his 18 years’ experience at Raymond James, Ben worked in public finance for the Ministry of Finance in Ottawa and at the University of Toronto’s International Centre for Tax Studies. Ben also sits on the board of the Cherniavsky Junior Fund, which provides financial assistance for musical performances to schools across B.C.
Avril Tysoe, Board Member:
Avril is a Human Resources Manager at Boughton Law where she manages the development and execution of all programs and initiatives in the areas of recruiting, compensation, benefits, talent acquisition, employee development, performance management and employee relations. She holds a B.A. from SFU and is a Certified Human Resources Professional. On a personal note, Avril lives in North Vancouver with her husband, daughter and their Boston Terrier, Tux. She feels honored to be sitting on Children’s Hearing & Speech Centre of BC’s Board and giving back to the community.
Calvina Chow, Board Member:
Calvina is a marketing professional. She holds a BComm with a specialization in Marketing from the University of British Columbia. Calvina is an avid skier and has become a highly-requested ski instructor. Aside from spending time on the mountains, she is also a competitive athlete for a top dragon boat team while dabbling in marathons and triathlons. Calvina was diagnosed with a hearing loss in both ears at a young age and received services from the Centre. She feels honored to be on the Board and to be able give back to the Children’s Hearing & Speech Centre of BC, a place that has played a huge part of her upbringing. She credits the Centre for giving her the necessary skills and confidence for her to meet any challenge she faces.
Gary Kern, Board Member:
Gary is the Principal of St. George’s Senior School in Vancouver. He has been an educator for the past 18 years and has been committed to improving the lives and opportunities of all students. Gary holds a M Sc from the University of Oregon and a B Education from UBC. He recently moved to Vancouver with his wife, Megan and 3 children, Dayna, Blair and Ian. Being relatively new to the Vancouver community, Gary looks forward to making a positive difference and contribution to Children’s Hearing & Speech Centre of BC.
Johannes Weinmar, Board Member:
Johannes understands the challenges of the hearing impaired, having bilateral hearing loss since childhood. He is an alumnus of the Children’s Hearing and Speech Centre, founded by Hilda Gregory. This early oral support allowed him to integrate into the mainstream school system in Vancouver, eventually earning an undergraduate degree from Simon Fraser University, before obtaining certifications as a Financial Planner, Chartered Life Underwriter and Financial Advisor. Today, Johannes is an experienced Financial Advisor, with over 8 years of professional experience serving clients in wealth management and investing, estate and retirement planning. Married to Katherine and having daughters, Claire and Alice, Johannes is happy to give back to the organization that gave him so much.
Dr. Matthew Dickson, Medical Advisor:
Dr. Dickson is the only pediatric otolaryngologist in the Fraser Health Authority and serves as the ENT Physician in the investigation of newborn and infant hearing loss. His role has mainly been to educate families about etiology and ear or hearing related issues. Being a part of Children’s Hearing allows Matthew to be involved in a more holistic manner and contribute to the community on another level. Previously, he has been a volunteer at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, Easter Seals Camp Squamish, and BCCA Camptimes. He is married to his beautiful wife Caroline and has two happy girls, Pauline and Keira.
