Enrollment at Children’s Hearing & Speech Centre of BC is available to children with hearing loss, whose parents and/or guardians choose to be a partner in their child’s listening and spoken language education.
Families are referred to the Children’s Hearing & Speech Centre of BC through BC Early Hearing Program, audiologists, Infant Development Programs, community hearing clinics and other educational programs. A phone intake is the first step and is followed by a site visit with the Principal & Executive Director.
If Children’s Hearing & Speech Centre of BC is determined to be a good fit with the family, they complete a registration packet and the first session is scheduled with a listening and spoken language professional. All families are given a Parent Handbook and, in most cases are matched with a current family to answer questions and help facilitate the transition.
When a child is being seen by other support workers, case conferences are held to ensure the child and family are receiving collaborative services from all of the child’s interventionists. Throughout a child’s enrollment at Children’s Hearing & Speech Centre of BC, diagnostic teaching determines if the child is getting the support services and modifications necessary for listening and spoken language success.
Children’s Hearing & Speech Centre of BC admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, or bursary programs.
Based on space available and suitability of program, siblings of students with hearing loss, English as a second language students, or area residents may be admitted to classes if this is in the best interest of all of the children served and Children’s Hearing & Speech Centre of BC. Final authority for an admission decision is with the Executive Director & Principal.
